A store page that says ‘online multiplayer’ or ‘cross-platform progression’ does not necessarily mean PC and console players can enter the same lobby. Cross-play support may change by platform pair, mode, console generation, region, and account setting.

Rather than giving you a list that can become outdated, this guide shows how to verify the current status of any game. The goal is not to spot one badge; it is to check official information in the right order and determine whether you and a friend can actually join the same session.

Define the exact two platforms you are comparing

‘Is this game cross-play?’ is incomplete. PC–PlayStation, PC–Xbox, Xbox–PlayStation, Switch–mobile, and old–new console generations can have different answers. Write down the two devices and the intended mode before searching.

A query such as ‘Can PC and PS5 play ranked together?’ produces more relevant results than the game name plus ‘crossplay.’ Including the platform pair and mode also reduces the chance of relying on an old or unrelated result.

  • Two devices or platforms
  • Console generation
  • Game mode
  • Region and server
  • Edition or game version

Start with the game’s official support page

The publisher or developer support center is the most reliable starting point. Search it for ‘cross-play,’ ‘cross-platform multiplayer,’ or ‘platform compatibility.’ Check the update date and the version discussed on the page.

If the official copy only says cross-play is supported, find the detailed platform table. Publishers may place it in a chart or an FAQ. Do not assume support when your device is not explicitly included.

Use store labels as a second check, not final proof

Steam, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Nintendo eShop feature labels are useful, but terminology differs. ‘Online multiplayer’ may refer only to people inside the same ecosystem. ‘Cross-platform multiplayer’ is a stronger signal but may still omit the compatible platforms.

When a store listing conflicts with the official support page, check recent patch notes and publisher announcements. A newly added or removed feature may take time to appear in store copy.

Separate cross-play, cross-save, and cross-progression

Cross-play puts players from different platforms into one multiplayer session. Cross-save moves a save file; cross-progression carries levels and unlocked content. Cross-gen usually describes compatibility between two generations of one console family.

Cross-progression on a feature page does not prove that you can play together. Look for language that explicitly refers to multiplayer matchmaking or shared lobbies.

  • Cross-play: shared multiplayer session
  • Cross-save: transferable save file
  • Cross-progression: transferable progress
  • Cross-gen: compatibility between console generations
  • Cross-buy: one purchase for multiple editions

Read the mode, lobby, and server restrictions

Cross-play may not cover the whole game. Casual and co-op can be open while ranked is closed; private lobbies may work while tournaments require one platform. Read footnotes and mode-specific help pages.

Regional servers matter too. Technically compatible platforms may fail to invite each other when account regions or data centers differ. Verify the exact server and mode you plan to use before recruiting teammates.

Check console generation and game edition

PS4 and PS5 or Xbox One and Series editions can use different clients under the same game name. A person running the current-generation edition may be unable to join a friend on the older client. Some games solve this with the backward-compatible edition; others do not.

When Standard, Enhanced, Definitive, or generation-specific editions exist, confirm which one the support table covers. The file name or version number in the main menu can show whether both players use the same client.

Confirm account and settings requirements

A supported game may ship with cross-play disabled. Players may need to link a publisher account, add friends through an in-game ID, enable cross-network communication, or allow it in parental controls. Both players should complete the official setup steps.

Link accounts only through the game or the publisher’s verified website. Do not sign in through a link from a forum post, and never share passwords, two-factor codes, or recovery codes.

Use community reports to check recency

Reddit, Discord, forums, and videos can help diagnose a specific problem, but a player’s experience last year may not describe today’s support. Check the post date, patch number, and exact platforms.

Use community sources after—not instead of—the official documentation. Several current reports of the same failure may indicate a temporary server or patch issue, but base long-term compatibility decisions on developer information.

Make the final call with a short test lobby

If the documentation says the pair is compatible, update the game on both devices, enable cross-play, and add each other through the required in-game account. Test invitations, audio, and connection in a private or casual lobby before scheduling a long ranked session.

If the test fails, check in this order: version number, platform table, mode, region, privacy setting, and service status. Change one item at a time so you can identify the cause.

  • Current version on both devices
  • Correct in-game friend ID
  • Same region and compatible mode
  • Cross-play and communication permissions
  • Short private or casual test

Add verified platform details to your MateUp profile

After confirming support, list the game, your device, compatible platforms, region, and preferred mode in your MateUp profile. Replace a vague ‘cross-play on’ line with something concrete, such as ‘PS5, Zero Build with PC and Xbox.’

Download MateUp from the App Store or Google Play to meet players who are technically compatible. Confirm platform and mode in the first message, then use a short test lobby to check both the connection and the way you play together.
